axoCellsTM retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells

Description

Build high-quality in vitro dry AMD models in just 4 weeks.

Ensure confidence in your workflow with high-quality Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE) cells differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and assay-ready in just 4 weeks. Derived from consenting donor PBMCs, our RPE cells have been specifically developed for use in powerful  in vitro  models and systems for drug discovery.

With Axol, you can rely on robust, physiologically relevant RPE cells that express the key markers (MITF, ZO-1 and PMEL17) and display typical morphology. That means robust, physiologically relevant models of the retina, for ophthalmology research and drug discovery

Supporting quality and consistency

Confidently carry out your workflow with our high-quality iPSCs manufactured with rigorous quality control procedures and guided by decades of scientific experience. All cells come with a full Certificate of Analysis to ensure ethical and biological conformity for your peace of mind.

Join our customer base of biopharma and academic institutions in building robust, physiologically relevant disease models for research and drug discovery.

How to get high-functioning RPE cells:

  • You’ll need RPE cells, PCi-RPE_CAU,  and all reagents
  • Follow the protocol
  • 4 weeks later you will have highly functional RPE cells

Phenotypic relevance: Morphology

Human iPSC-derived RPE cells demonstrate typical cobblestone morphology and pigmentation on microscopy.

Phenotypic relevance: ICC

RPE cells express key markers MITF, ZO-1 and PMEL17 on ICC.

RPE key markers

Phenotypic relevance: flow cytometry

Flow cytometry demonstrating >95% PMEL 17 expression (blue) against isotype control (black).

Functional relevance: phagocytosis

The phagocytotic potential of iPSC-derived RPE cells was assessed using a pH-Rhodo bioparticle assay (Thermo Fisher), demonstrating phagocytotic activity in 57.2% of the RPE cells, which is within the range described in the literature.

A unique model that recapitulate the main hallmarks of dry AMD

We developed a model that mimic lipofuscin accumulation, a key mechanism in RPE aging and AMD progression

A unique model that recapitulate the main hallmarks of dry AMD

Prolonged A2E treatment followed by blue light illumination recapitulates some of the key pathological mechanisms of AMD: Increased oxidative stress, complement cascade activation, accumulation of drusen-like deposits, and increased expression of inflammatory factors.

Applications

Our RPE cells have been specifically developed for use in advanced in vitro ophthalmology models for toxicology testing, research and drug discovery.

We have a community of  biopharma and research institutes that use our RPE cells to build powerful in vitro models for toxicology screening and to model ophthalmic disorders (including dry AMD) for drug discovery.

Quality

Guided by over a decade of expertise, we ensure confidence in the quality of our iPSC-derived cells with rigorous QC. All cells come with a full Certificate of Analysis to ensure ethical and biological conformity for your peace of mind.

Licenses & Consent

Axol has obtained all relevant licenses for reprogramming donor samples into iPSCs and differentiating these into RPE cells for commercial use.

Patient samples used to create these RPE cells have been ethically sourced and consented for research and commercial use. All cells come with a full Certificate of Analysis and are officially certified by HPSCreg®, to ensure ethical and biological conformity for your peace of mind.
