With over a decade of expertise and a global customer base, Axol Bioscience are market leaders in the induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) industry. We believe in the potential of iPSCs to transform drug discovery, de-risking the process while helping to deliver better, safer therapies to patients worldwide. We recognize the critical role that pharmaceutical companies in Japan have in advancing this field, so we remain dedicated to providing the tools and expertise needed for its success. We see great value in building and maintaining these relationships, in keeping with our company values of Transparency, Integrity, Accountability, Performance, Diversity & Inclusion, and Collaboration.
Our commitment to pharmaceutical companies in Japan
At Axol, we’ve dedicated time and effort to understanding the unique challenges of pharmaceutical companies in Japan. Our CEO, Liam Taylor, committed to visit Japan every four months to attend events and speak to organizations, to understand how Axol can best help them with their goals.
“Ever since Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka first published on iPSC methodologies, Japan’s pharmaceutical companies have been at the forefront of utilizing stem cells. Axol is uniquely placed to help accelerate iPSC-based programs, supporting the development of better human disease models for drug discovery. I’ve met with dozens of Japanese pharmaceutical groups and attended conferences including JSAAE and BioJapan. Through these conversations, have identified significant challenges in accessing diverse biosamples and scaling up iPSC programs. At Axol, we’re delighted to support and advance pharmaceutical companies in Japan with our iPSC licenses, products, and ongoing support.”
– Liam Taylor, CEO of Axol Bioscience
During his most recent visit, Liam and Axol’s Chief Scientific Officer Ashley Barnes met with 31 different companies and attended BioJapan in Yokohama. These visits are incredibly valuable as it means forming partnerships and friendships, and creating specific plans to support key aspects including access to appropriate licenses, increased diversity of biosamples and sporadic disease lines.
Advancing pharmaceutical companies in Japan with iPSC expertise
We partner with pharmaceutical companies who want to access the power of iPSC technology for their strategic objectives. We help them through our main iPSC capabilities:
- axoLinesTM: our commercial library of over 70 iPSC lines derived from a diverse sample of healthy and patient donors, across 8 main therapy areas including Alzheimer’s Disease, ALS and Huntington’s Disease
- axoCellsTM: high-quality iPSC-derived cells manufactured in bulk with excellent functional consistency, including neuronal cells, neuroinflammatory cells and cardiomyocytes, which can be incorporated into advanced in vitro platforms including organ-on-chip devices, clinical trial in a dish platforms and complex co-culture models
- axoServicesTM: our comprehensive range of custom lab services: reprogramming, gene editing, differentiation, compound screening and custom assays
We also partner with pharmaceutical organizations to build robust axoModelsTM, advanced iPSC-based test systems for disease modeling and compound screening. Across all of our projects, we offer our extensive in-house expertise and support to overcome technical challenges for our customers.
Overcoming unique challenges for pharmaceutical companies in Japan
Through our axoLines commercial iPSC library, we’ve developed a range of diverse patient samples with sporadic disease mutations, that can be accessed by pharmaceutical groups in Japan as iPSC lines, or differentiated into endpoint cells. Our leading manufacturing and logistics capabilities, supported by our Japanese distribution partner Cosmo Bio, mean we can supply these diverse samples to groups experiencing difficulties with sourcing cell samples. We have full ethics, consent and licenses for all of our iPSC products and prioritize quality and consistency. We have also developed the in-house expertise to provide strategic support to pharmaceutical organizations as their iPSC programs scale up. In our conversations, we have identified this as a major challenge for the industry.
